Only works one way

I got this app for my iPad so I could read Spanish books and stories. With the app icon showing 2 direction arrows I assumed it would translate a selected Spanish word into English. Instead it simply defines the Spanish word in Spanish. Why cant I select the direction for the definition...Spanish into English?
